Marvel Studios has been in a strange place in the years since Avengers: Endgame. Having closed out a story they told over 23 films in 10 years, the question “what’s next?” rang through everyone’s mind. Then came the pandemic, and then more important real-world drama forced Marvel to abandon a villain they’d spent several films and series setting up. But more than anything, the latest Marvel movies and series just couldn’t connect with the audience at large as they had done in the past. Perhaps “superhero fatigue” can explain the disconnect, but regardless, the question now is, how do they recover?
For me, it’s getting back to what made us all fall in love with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the first place: compelling characters and great, focused storytelling. Several of their projects have achieved this, such as WandaVision, Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel, and now their latest project, Wonder Man.
Wonder Man is unlike anything that we have seen in the MCU to date. A meta story about heroes, Hollywood, self-expression and finding your truth, that is, in a word, excellent.
