Shrinking Grows Past Its Familiar Story | Exclaim!
With so much content these days, it can sometimes feel like there are no new stories. Shrinking, AppleTV+’s new series starring Jason Segel, covers familiar territory: an affluent, white male therapist living in an affluent neighbourhood full of affluent friends has hit rock bottom after a year of grief and begins to act out as a means of reconnecting with his own humanity — and, by extension, reconnecting with his family, colleagues and friends. But, despite its conventional premise, Shrinking is executed so well that the old feels new again. 2023 Pandora International Critics Awards
The 2023 Pandora International Critics Awards are my second as a voting member of the group. This year there was one particular film that dominated the conversation! We have to go back to the Academy Awards in 1972 when Cabaret took home 8 Oscars – including Best Director and two acting prizes – without the big prize, Best Picture. That went to The Godfather, which also conquered in Best Actor and Screenplay. As we digest the recently announced winners for the 4th Pandora International Film Critics awards, there’s almost an exact mirror of those events some 50 years ago. Broker Unboxes Found Families | Exclaim!
What makes a family? This is the question on Hirokazu Kore-eda‘s mind lately. As with his 2018 Palme D’or-winning film Shoplifters, Broker attempts to answer that question by examining a most unlikely found family: a group of people brought together via human trafficking. That might sound sensational, but the film concentrates its characters around a so-called “baby box,” a place where mothers can leave infants that they either can’t or won’t care for. Ha Sang-hyeon (Song Kang-ho), a laundromat owner, and his friend Dong-soo (Gang Dong-won), who volunteers at the church where the baby box is, occasionally scoop up dropped-off babies and sell them…
